Wolves star Ruben Neves is Arsenal’s top summer central midfield target, according to Di Marzio.

They claim that the Gunners have an interest in Italy’s Euro 2020 star Manuel Locatelli.

But he wants to wait for a swoop by Juventus, which means Mikel Arteta has turned his attention to Neves.

That’s because they need a replacement for Granit Xhaka, who has an agreement with Roma already.

Links between Neves and Arsenal first sprung up about a month ago.

They didn’t go down that well with Wolves fans at that time, and neither did the reported £40 million price tag.

They went quiet while Neves was away at Euro 2020 but now it’s been a fair while since Portugal’s elimination and he’ll likely want his future sorted.

It seems like Wolves need to sell to buy this summer, but Neves has been one of the cornerstones of their success and celebrated four years at the club yesterday.

Arsenal isn’t a step up

Wolves’ momentum was stunted last season and they failed to qualify for Europe.

But so did Arsenal and they really look a team in need of a lot of work to get back into the upper reaches of the league.

Would Neves really be taking a step up in terms of his prospects if he went there?

It was recently claimed that the Neves exit rumours were largely being driven by Jorge Mendes, and time will tell if that’s the case.
