Bruno Lage has conducted his pre-match press conference ahead of Wolves’ FA Cup third round clash with Sheffield United.
Lage recently commented on the size of his squad and said he wanted a new central defender, winger and striker in the January window.
It was quite rare to hear a manager be that candid about what he wants in the transfer market.
That is even more pertinent when you consider Wolves had a quiet summer and the aim seems to be becoming self-sufficient.
Since then, the club have spoken out about their plans for the month ahead, stating that they do not intend to be especially active.
And speaking ahead of the clash with the Blades, Lage seems to have edged back from being so forthright about what he wants.
He said: “We understand what the team needs to continue to grow up. We talked during August about what I think the club needs.
“Injured players will return. Me as a manager, I need to understand the situation of the club. In this moment it’s better to recall players.”
Naturally, plenty of Wolves had their say on Lage’s comments, with some believing that there has been a talk between him and those higher up at the club.
In truth, it is not productive for the manager to be saying he clearly wants three players and the club to be saying they will not be doing much business.
In order to maintain the united front, something had to give and here is how those comments went down on social media ahead of Sunday’s game…
Bit of a climb down there. Interesting. #wwfc

He's been told off, hasn't he?

With FFP we simply cannot afford to waste money on sloppy signings that may come to nothing. They need to be at the right price and give the maximum return. Getting these loan players and injured players back will be like new signings anyway.

Bit of a come down from 2 quality players for each position, they owe us a big summer window then.

Lage 6 days ago: “We need one centre-back. Also we can find one more winger and a different striker"

Situation at the club? We are allowed to sign players aren't we 🤔🤣

At least he didn’t say solutions 🤣

Bruno is doing a great job with the squad he has at his disposal. But I'm sure the lack of strength in depth will eventually take it's toll. I don't think people will blame him, if a promising season peters out
