Wolves have been linked with a move for promising young Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.
According to a report from The Telegraph, Wanderers have been scouting the 19-year-old and are one of several teams to be showing interest in him ahead of the summer transfer window.
Ekitike is on the club’s radar, but Wolves will supposedly prioritise a move for Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes, who has recently suggested he’ll consider his options at the end of the season.
It could be that Wolves fail to land Guedes though and Ekitike becomes a focus, for a side that has again struggled to score goals this season.
Ekitike has regularly appeared in the transfer gossip columns this year, but just who is the exciting young centre-forward? Here’s a few things to know…
Who is Hugo Ekitike?
He’s having a breakout season
Ekitike actually made his debut for Reims back in October 2020, just a few months after signing his first professional deal with the club.
He made a handful of appearances, before joining Danish Superliga outfit Vejle Boldklub mid-season.
He would scored a few goals there, and return to Reims ahead of 2021/22 having gained a bit of experience.
And it seemingly served him well, because Ekitike has enjoyed a breakout season in 2021/22, scoring 10 goals in 24 games across all competitions.
He’s been out of action since February due to a hamstring injury, with Reims stumbling slightly in his absence and winning just three games.
Ekitike is still very young and inexperienced. He is not yet capped with the France senior national team.
But he has appeared for the U20s a couple of times. He also made the bench for the U21s last November against Armenia, but didn’t get on.
One would imagine he’ll soon bring himself into contention for Didier Deschamps’ senior squad if he continues his exciting development.
He’s inspired by Kylian Mbappe
Perhaps it is no surprise that Ekitike wants to follow in the footsteps of Kylian Mbappe.
The Paris Saint-Germain superstar is not only the face of French football, but one of the best players in the world.
Ekitike has actually drawn comparisons to him already in his career.
If he is able to experience anything like the rise Mbappe has had, then whoever his club is will be in luck.
He’s a wanted man
Ekitike’s form this season has not gone unnoticed.
Wolves are one of several teams to have interest in the 19-year-old, with 90min reporting in February that the Premier League’s Big Six were circling.
The likes of Atletico Madrid, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich were all mentioned too.
And Ekitike was actually the subject of heavy interest from Newcastle United in January.
The Magpies tried to land him with a £25 million bid, but the youngster did not want to change clubs mid-season and at short notice.
