Wolves play at Molineux for the last time this season today – and it will likely be the final appearance in old gold for Joao Gomes.

It has been a long and horrible season, with just two games remaining now for Wolves.

Today it’s one last trip to Molineux to face Fulham, and the players owe the fans a performance after the dreadful display at Brighton and frankly, far too many other terrible showings throughout the campaign.

A lot of players appear to have checked out already, which is inexplicable.

But one man fans can count on to still show a bit of heart is Joao Gomes.

Gomes has been linked with Atletico Madrid for a number of weeks now – and it seems a move is now far more likely to happen than not.

Atletico Madrid think Joao Gomes deal is practically sealed

According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Gomes’ proposed move to Atletico Madrid is now extremely close.

Speaking on Fabrizio Romano in Italiano, he said: “I’ll tell you that Atletico (have) practically sealed the arrival of Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton. Atletico believe they have practically sealed it.

Is £40m a fair price for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer? 🤔

The club have reportedly set their asking price for the Brazilian, who cost just £15m in January 2023…

“The feeling is that it’s closed. All that’s really missing is the last few bureaucratic things, let’s say.”

It was reported earlier this week that Gomes has been hell-bent on joining Atletico.

Other clubs have been in for Gomes, with some even offering more money than the Spanish giants.

But the Brazilian has wanted to go to Atleti, where he’d fight for titles, play Champions League football and work under Diego Simeone, who could be amazing for his development. Gomes has been their top target for a while, and it’s now only a matter of time until it’s finalised.

There has not been any word of an agreement on a fee just yet, but Wolves have reportedly wanted about £40 million.

Joao Gomes deserves a great reception today at Molineux

Potentially, there could be a bit of a spiky atmosphere today at Molineux, especially after the game and especially if Wolves have lost the game and put in another poor performance.

Even a victory today might not save the players and Rob Edwards from a show of dissent from the crowd.

But Joao Gomes is one player who deserves a nice reception, ahead of his looming departure.

Times have been very tough at this club in recent years, but Gomes has never once downed tools and always fought hard for that badge.

He’s one of only a few in that squad who truly deserve a move to a top club and fans shouldn’t begrudge him that.
