Joao Gomes is widely expected to leave Wolves this summer – and there has been a development involving Atletico Madrid.
Joao Gomes joined Wolves in January 2023, and has been a hugely popular figure since his arrival.
Should any of these NOT be on this list? And are there any who aren’t there who SHOULD be on? 🤔
The Athletic have claimed Wolves would like these nine players to stay after relegation…
Fans took to him before he’d even signed, after it was reported he went above and beyond to seal a move to Wolves over Lyon, who had offered more money to Flamengo.
Gomes has regularly impressed in Wolves’ midfield, and has been adored for his tenacious playing style.
His exit this summer is practically certain, as realistically there is just no way he stays to play Championship football.
Atletico Madrid have been linked in recent days, and now there is word of a shift in strategy by the Spanish club.
Atletico Madrid to prioritise signing Joao Gomes from Wolves

Gomes has long been linked with an exit from Wolves.
With the club struggling so much, there have been frequent reports about interest from other clubs, with the likes of Manchester United and Crystal Palace linked from the Premier League.
But Atleti’s interest was reported last week, and it seems they’re ready to ramp up their efforts to agree a deal.
RTI Esporte have reported that Atleti are now going to prioritise Gomes this summer, with their other target Ederson of Atalanta seemingly now off the cards.
They were apparently in advanced negotiations over Ederson, but they have now broken down.
Is £40m a fair price for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer? 🤔
The club have reportedly set their asking price for the Brazilian, who cost just £15m in January 2023…
So Gomes is now their top midfield target.
It’s stated he is seen as ‘a player with an ideal profile for the intense and competitive style of play of the team led by Diego Simeone’.
Wolves are asking for £40 million for the player, which would see them making £25 million profit on him.
It had previously been claimed that Wolves had wanted to start negotiations with clubs over Gomes at £60 million.
Gomes could thrive under Simeone
It’ll be interesting to see if Gomes does head to the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.
Atleti are a huge club, and they could yet win the Champions League for the first time before the campaign ends. They take on Arsenal in the first leg of the semi-final tonight.
Simeone is known for being a defensive-minded coach and Gomes could really thrive under him.

There’s been a little bit of speculation about Simeone’s future, but he has a contract with Atleti until 2027 so there’s every chance Gomes would get to work with him.
As for the asking price that’s been reported, Wolves would be doing good business selling at £40 million.
To sell for that much after relegation would be good going, especially given it would net the club a £25 million profit.
