Joao Gomes’ exit from Wolves is inevitable this summer – and one new claim today has a familiar feel to it.

The season is thankfully almost over, and Wolves will soon set about offloading players following relegation.

It is a huge summer for the Old Gold, as they seek to prepare themselves for a potentially very tough season in the Championship.

Is £40m a fair price for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer? 🤔

The club have reportedly set their asking price for the Brazilian, who cost just £15m in January 2023…

As per RTI Esporte

Joao Gomes was always likely to be one of the first out the door.

He’s been strongly linked with Atletico Madrid recently, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that personal terms are no issue.

But now, it seems Gomes is doing exactly what he did when he joined Wolves.

According to journalist Pablo Oliveira on X, Gomes is all set to complete his move to Atletico – and the Brazilian has turned down approaches from several other clubs.

Apparently, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Atalanta, Galatasaray and Leeds United have all expressed interest and some have even offered more money than Atletico.

Atleti are said to be offering about £38.5 million, with negotiations continuing. Wolves have been reported to want about £40 million for him.

But Gomes only wants Atleti, which he sees as a unique opportunity.

Certainly, Gomes’ tenacious style suggests he would be a very good fit at the Spanish giants, and he could learn a lot under the tutelage of Diego Simeone.

Joao Gomes adopted similar stance when he joined Wolves

This situation has a familiar feel to it, because Gomes did the same thing when he joined Wolves in January 2023.

At the time, Wolves were trying to poach him from Flamengo, but also in the picture were Lyon.

The French club were actually offering more money than Wolves, but the Old Gold won the race because of Gomes’ firm stance.

He only wanted the Old Gold, which effectively forced Flamengo to do business with Wolves and not Lyon.

That made him hugely popular from the off at Molineux, and he has remained a fans’ favourite throughout his time at the club.

There is slight frustration in that Wolves now look set to sell for slightly cheaper than they would like.

But Gomes has been a brilliant servant to the club, and the club will probably make that move happen for him.
