Joao Gomes’ time as a Wolves player is almost over, with an agreement for his transfer to Atletico Madrid now being reached.
The Brazilian looks all set to become the first departure at Molineux this summer, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
Joao Gomes joined Wolves in January 2023 from Flamengo, and has been hugely popular from the moment he signed.
Is £40m a fair price for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer? 🤔
The club have reportedly set their asking price for the Brazilian, who cost just £15m in January 2023…
The Brazilian ensured his move to Wolves over transfer rivals Lyon, and has given his all in every game since signing.
The game with Burnley on Sunday will be his 131st and final Wolves appearance, with a definitive transfer update arriving last night.
The transfer fee Atletico Madrid are set to pay for Joao Gomes
Gomes’ move to Atletico has been close for days now.
But Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas last night reported that an agreement has now been reached for the player’s transfer.
His update on Sky Sports reads: “Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal in principle with Wolves to sign midfielder Joao Gomes.
“A fee totalling £39m (€45m) has been settled between the clubs and work is being finalised to make him an Atletico player when the transfer window re-opens next month.”

With Wolves signing Gomes for around £15 million, this means a fairly healthy profit on the player.
£39 million is perhaps below his true market value. But Wolves’ relegation realistically means the club will have to accept less than they’d ideally like.
£39 million is still a fairly good fee though, and he is set to become the club’s eight-biggest sale ever, after Matheus Cunha, Matheus Nunes, Pedro Neto, Ruben Neves, Jorgen Strand Larsen, Max Kilman and Diogo Jota.
Gomes one of Fosun’s best transfers
Most of the best transfers at Wolves on Fosun’s watch happened in their early days of owning the club.
But Gomes is most definitely one of the best made in more recent times.
There have been times of real hardship over the last few seasons, but Gomes has conducted himself superbly and he has always played for that badge.
It’s been clear to see that he has cared deeply and loves the club, and what’s happened this season will have hurt him deeply.

Indeed, he said recently (via Wolves official): “I feel very, very sad. Not only me, but my family, for the fans here. I love this city and the people here, for me it’s a very big disappointment.”
He was essentially the replacement for Ruben Neves at Wolves, even taking the Portuguese’s old number eight shirt.
Gomes proved to be a worthy successor and while he’s not leaving to quite the same cult hero status, he is certainly adored and appreciated by the vast majority of fans.
