Joao Gomes and Andre have both harboured hopes of making Brazil’s World Cup squad.
The pair have featured heavily again this season for Wolves, but both have been some way below the levels they showed in the previous season.
Is £40m a fair price for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer? 🤔
The club have reportedly set their asking price for the Brazilian, who cost just £15m in January 2023…
It’s been a dismal season for the Old Gold which has ended in relegation, and unfortunately Gomes and Andre have been unable to prevent that from happening.
Amid the tough season with Wolves, both have had their eyes on the Brazil squad.
And last night, Carlo Ancelotti made his final decision.
Joao Gomes and Andre miss out on Brazil’s World Cup squad

Unfortunately, both Joao Gomes and Andre have failed to make the final 26-man Brazil squad for the World Cup this summer in North America.
The midfielders Carlo Ancelotti has chosen are as follows:
- Casemiro (Manchester United)
- Lucas Paqueta (Flamengo)
- Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United)
- Fabinho (Al-Ittihad)
- Danilo Santos (Botafogo)
Ancelotti is by in charge of the Brazil national team for one year now, but only called Gomes and Andre up for one squad, which was during the October 2025 international break.
And he actually only used Andre for 11 minutes in a friendly against South Korea.
So it was always going to been an uphill battle for Gomes and Andre to make the final squad.
Regardless though, it will still be very disappointing news for both players.
What Joao Gomes said before World Cup rejection
Ahead of Wolves’ game with Fulham, Gomes had expressed his excitement about playing for Brazil at the World Cup
He said (via Wolves official): “It is every player’s dream. If you ask many players, they will say they want to play at a World Cup. I don’t know [if he’ll be picked], it’s a decision for the coach, but if he did call me, I would be 100 per cent ready.
“When you talk about Brazil, for me it’s always the best team in the world. It will be very difficult to win, and there are many good teams, but I will give everything for my country.”
Given Wolves’ season, it’s no real surprise neither Gomes nor Andre made it in.

It’s a shame for them, but at the same time neither can really argue Ancelotti’s decision.
Both players are now highly likely to leave Molineux after Wolves’ relegation, and hopefully they’ll work their way into the squad in the future.
In the case of Gomes, Atletico Madrid feel they’ve as good as signed the player.
