29-year-old likely to leave Molineux as Wolves enter into talks with Matt Doherty

Wolves defender Jonny Castro Otto is ‘likely’ to leave Molineux, as the club work on a deal to bring Matt Doherty back to the club.

Last night, it was claimed that Wanderers were set to re-sign Doherty, who is currently free agent.

The Republic of Ireland international recently left Atletico Madrid after making just two appearances.

He went there in January of this year, after leaving Tottenham Hotspur.

It didn’t work out for Doherty at Spurs following his move there from Wolves in the summer of 2020.

But it looks as though he could now return to where he made his name, and that could spell the end for Jonny.

Jonny still likely to leave Wolves this summer

According to the Express & Star, Jonny is likely to depart Molineux this summer.

Despite being capable of playing on either side of the defence, the feeling is seemingly that Jonny’s time at Molineux is up.

But as of now there has been no word of any interest from other clubs.

There has also been no word on an asking price for Jonny.

He’s still got two years left on his contract so Wolves will hope to bring in a decent amount.

But Wolves must also be realistic. Jonny’s form last season was disappointing, and the player has of course suffered a couple of bad injuries in recent years.

It would be shame to see Jonny go, but the right call

Wolves selling Jonny this summer would be the right decision.

He didn’t feature much last season, and then when he came in he didn’t convince. Perhaps not being first-choice meant that he could not build up any kind of momentum.

It’s always nice to have a player who can operate on either side of the pitch.

But Jonny has sadly looked shadow of the player he was a few years ago. And that was perhaps to be expected given those awful injuries.

It would be shame to see him go, because he was a top player in his early days at the club.

But Wolves have Hugo Bueno, Rayan Ait-Nouri and potentially Ryan Giles as left-back options. And on the right, Nelson Semedo is admired a lot by Julen Lopetegui, who could now be about to sign Doherty.
