Wolves handed Championship fixtures with September 19th looking tantalising

Wolves will play in the Championship in 2026/27 – and the club have today learned their fixture list.

After being relegated from the Premier League, the Old Gold are now preparing to play in the second tier for the first time since 2018.

Many thought Rob Edwards would be leading the team into this new season, given his previous experience of the division.

But a couple of weeks ago he was sacked after Guo Guangchang lost faith in him. It was a decision that would have come sooner had agent Jorge Mendes not been otherwise engaged.

Cesar Peixoto is the man tasked with guiding Wolves back to the top-flight – and the Portuguese now knows the pattern of Wanderers’ fixtures.

Wolves kick off with a home game against Blackburn Rovers on August 14, and the other two games in that month are Preston away and Stoke City at home the weekend after.

Arguably, that is a decent start for Peixoto in terms of fixture difficulty, with all three teams having finished in the bottom half last season.

September gets more tricky, with West Ham United, Birmingham City, Portsmouth, Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion all to play. The first Black Country Derby is at Molineux on September 19th, a date most Wolves fans will be marking down immediately.

It is worth pointing out though that this game will likely be selected for TV coverage and could be moved.

The reverse fixture at the Hawthorns takes place in February 20.

January looks like it could be a test, with Millwall, Burnley, Cardiff City, Bristol City and Wrexham all lying in wait.

Wolves’ campaign concludes with an away game against Derby County, where hopefully Wolves are in a promotion position, or ideally, have already gone up back to the Premier League.

While there are no obvious ‘difficult’ periods on first glance, there is no doubt it is going to be a challenging season for Wolves.

Teams will be particularly fired up against a club that has just come down from the top-flight. There will also potentially be added motivation to beat one of the early favourites for promotion.

It will be important for Peixoto – who wants to see ‘ambition, with strong character, and a strong identity of the club’ – to make a good start, and the first three fixtures feel like a good opportunity to do that.

Hopefully, the Portuguese can settle quickly and send a bit of a message to the rest of the league.
