Rob Edwards gave one of his best comments as Wolves manager in Raul Jimenez announcement

Wolves fans are on cloud nine, after the club brought back Raul Jimenez on a free transfer – but one comment by Rob Edwards needs acknowledgment.

Wanderers made it two signings in two days after Kieran Trippier joined the club on Monday.

That was a brilliant move, but it has arguably been trumped by the Jimenez signing, which has been in the offing for a few weeks.

Jimenez himself floated the idea of returning to Molineux, after Wolves played Fulham in their final home game of the season.

He had other offers, but chose to come back to Molineux to help the club get promoted back to the Premier League. And he will wear the number nine shirt while doing so.

It’s been a whirlwind past few days, but credit must go to Rob Edwards, Nathan Shi and Matt Jackson for their efforts.

And Edwards made a comment yesterday that really should be praised.

After such a horrible 2025/26 season, it was really important for Wolves to act productively and decisively from the off this summer.

The club have absolutely done that so far, with the two new, high-profile signings, the retention of the likes of Andre and Mateus Mane, and the launch of that stunning new kit.

But all eyes are going to be on the construction of that squad going into 2026/27, and there is still plenty of work to be done.

But what will really be important for Wolves is to sign the right characters, just as they have done with Trippier and Jimenez.

And Edwards clearly recognises that, saying: “He’s another player, like Tripps – and it will be the case with anyone we sign this summer – because they’re not signing now to play in the Premier League, they’re signing to play for Wolves.

“I’ve been fed up of hearing over the years when a new player is signed and they say, ‘It’s always been my dream to play in the Premier League’. What I want to hear from players is that they want to play for Wolves.”

This is totally refreshing from Edwards.

It’s something that gets said a lot, and it is important to make the distinction.

The focus should not necessarily be on playing in the Premier League. It should first and foremost be about representing Wolves.

Perhaps some players down the years lost sight of why they were at the club, and maybe some never had the right vision to begin with.

But it seems that Edwards is hell-bent on only bringing genuine characters who want to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, and for that he deserves credit.

Of course, Edwards will need a good start next season because the jury is still out on him for a lot of people.

But he’s made all the right noises this summer and deserves a new wave of support heading into the Championship campaign.
