Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves is on Manchester United’s back-up list.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, the Red Devils are focusing their efforts on signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
Supposedly, the Premier League giants have been assured that the Netherlands international would be keen to join them (via Metro).
Currently though, there is an issue with de Jong being owed wages by Barca.
Once that issue is resolved, it is thought United can complete a move.
It therefore seems that any move to Old Trafford for Wanderers star Neves is unlikely.
Apparently, the £16 million man is only on their list of back-up targets at the moment, along with Leicester City maestro Youri Tielemans.
It is starting to feel as though Neves will not be leaving Molineux during this window.
United are clearly trying all they can to land de Jong. And Barcelona reportedly cooled their interest in Neves recently, and could look to sign him in a year’s time if he hasn’t moved on already.
Arsenal have been linked in 2022, and the Gunners might be Wolves’ best hope of making a sale if that’s what the club wanted.
That said, the Gunners have already spent a lot of money this summer on the likes of Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Jesus.
Ruben Neves looking set for another season at Wolves, as Manchester United set sights on de Jong
At this point it is looking like Neves could be sticking around for another season at Wolves. Or at least another half-season.
It was recently reported that he and Joao Moutinho were increasingly likely to be sticking put.
And it is starting to feel like the 25-year-old will, with United very keen on de Jong and Barcelona seemingly not financially capable of doing a deal.
It will be interesting to see what that could mean for Wolves in terms of bring new players in.
It had previously been suggested that Wolves were going to sell Neves to fund a rebuild.
Perhaps the club will now endeavour to shift the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Adama Traore.
