Wolves transfer news: President suggests Hugo Ekitike asking price

Wolves have learned the asking price of striker Hugo Ekitike, who is set to leave Reims this summer.

The young Frenchman has a host of clubs on his tail, following a really promising 2021/22 season.

Ekitike scored 11 goals for his club across 27 appearances.

The player suffered a hamstring injury in February that put him in the sidelines for a couple of months.

He returned to action in May, and got back amongst the goals in Reims’ final game of the season against Nice.

Ekitike is one of the hottest prospects in French football right now.

It looked as though he was going to leave the club mid-season to join Newcastle United following their takeover in October.

But everything was happening too quickly for young Ekitike, who decided to stay put and see out the season with Reims.

The Magpies are thought to still be keen, as well as a number of other clubs.

It was recently claimed that Wolves also hold an interest in Ekitike.

Wanderers need to sign a new centre-forward this summer, having really struggled in the final third throughout 2021/22.

As a young player with huge potential, Ekitike certainly has a profile that would interest Wolves.

And the club have now discovered how much it could take to sign him this summer.

Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot said (via Birmingham Mail): “The amount should be more than €20 million (£17 million). Afterwards, you have to know how to be reasonable.”

Caillot also confirmed they had rejected a bid of £29 million from Newcastle in January.

Wolves move for Hugo Ekitike is probably unlikely, as president suggests asking price

An initial £17 million feels like a decent and affordable asking price for Ekitike.

Wolves could potentially be in with a chance if Reims really would take just £17 million, with add-ons to come. It makes a deal much more manageable.

But the issue is it will probably entice many other clubs. And that asking price could therefore end up naturally increasing.

It would be brilliant if Wolves could land such a promising player like Ekitike.

But it feels like it will be a very difficult signing for the club to make.
