Wolves’ proposed deal to sign Joao Gomes from Lyon is stalling, because of an offer from French club Lyon.
The club looked all set to sign the Brazilian youngster, and he had been due to fly to England at the weekend.
But Brazilian journalist Vene Casagrande said yesterday that the player has not yet left his homeland.
Today, talkSPORT’s Alex Crook said that Wolves were in for Gomes, but the situation was not as advanced as had been initially reported.
Casagrande, who has been on this story right from the beginning, now has another update for Wolves fans. And it is a bit of a concerning one.
He says that the reason Wolves’ deal for Gomes is stalling is because Lyon have proposed something ‘a little better’.
Clearly, this is something that is very unexpected.
Gomes had been set travel to England, and renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano had suggested the deal was as good as done.
The move could of course still happen. But Wolves are now in competition with Lyon, and must work to blow them out of the water to get their man.
This development comes after Wolves released a video on YouTube yesterday of Mario Lemina’s first day at the club.
They included footage of Lemina in a car on his way for his medical.
On the radio, Crook was speaking about Wolves being in talks for Gomes, which seemed very deliberate.
It remains to be seen if the club can overcome this hurdle and pip Lyon to the post.
Casagrande has posted some more tweets since his first earlier today. He adds that Gomes wants to keep his word and sign for Wolves.
But Lyon’s bid is just under £16 million – that’s £1 million higher than Wolves’.
He also says that Wolves wanted to pay their fee in five installments.
A blow for Wolves over Joao Gomes as Lyon make bid for Brazilian prospect
So it transpires that Lyon are the reason Wolves are struggling a bit to get this deal done.
It’s a bit worrying. Lyon have a rather rich history of Brazilian players who have done well there. Over the years they’ve had the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Lucas Paqueta, Kenny Tete, Thiago Mendes, Juninho, Michel Bastos and many others.
So this could be an issue for Wolves.
But there’s still a reasonable chance they beat Lyon to Gomes.
And surely if it comes to it, Wanderers will have the financial might to force the Ligue 1 into submission.
