Wolves transfer news: Benfica looking to re-sign Goncalo Guedes

Wolves are facing competition to sign Goncalo Guedes, with the player’s former club Benfica now showing interest.

According to AS (via A Bola and O Jogo), the Valencia attacker is on the radar of the Portuguese giants, who are looking to reunite with the star they sold in 2017.

Last season, Guedes really starred for his club.

It was a mediocre campaign from Valencia, but Guedes contributed 13 goals and six assists in 42 appearances.

It was the most productive season of his career, and ultimately it has prompted a number of teams to show interest.

Back in April, The Telegraph reported that Wolves were looking to prioritise the signing of a new striker this summer, and that Guedes was a target.

So far though in the window, updates on Wolves potentially swooping for Guedes has been extremely scarce.

The club may now need to get a move on if they are to land him.

Benfica are looking to re-sign Guedes, and AS point to the fact they just sold Darwin Nunez to Liverpool for an initial £64 million fee (via BBC Sport).

The suggestion is that there is cash to burn, and it could now mean Wolves are up against it to sign the 25-year-old.

O Jogo claim Valencia are looking to recoup as much of the £34 million they paid to sign him from Paris Saint-Germain.

That is a lot of money, and it is questionable whether Wolves would pay such an amount without first selling a key player or two.

Frustration for Wolves as Benfica register interest in Guedes

If true, then this is a bit of blow for Wolves.

Benfica are Guedes’ boyhood club, and there is surely a lot of affection there.

If Wolves are serious about signing Guedes, then the club may need to get to work quickly.

It is thought Fabio Silva’s proposed loan move to Anderlecht is imminent, and so that could perhaps be the catalyst for any swoop.

Silva’s exit would obviously not provide the club with any funds, but it might just increase the urgency to get someone in to replace him. A player sale could come later in the window.
