Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White was something of a surprise outgoing yesterday.

The 21-year-old completed a loan move to Championship side Sheffield United.

The player also signed a new contract at Molineux before heading out.

There had been mention of Bournemouth being interested.

But Gibbs-White has moved to the Blades, where he will work under Slavisa Jokanovic.

It mirrors the way he started last season – heading out on loan to a second division side.

Last term Gibbs-White went to Swansea City and had been due to spend the season there.

But the player suffered a fractured foot, and was then recalled by Wolves in January to provide squad cover.

He initially struggled for minutes under Nuno Espirito Santo, and Wolves struggled for results.

Eventually he started getting chances, and arguably finished the season as one of Wolves’ best performers.

Some had anticipated Gibbs-White would have a role to play under Bruno Lage this season.

He did feature a fair bit in pre-season and played well.

But the decision has been made, and Wolves will now riskily proceed with only three senior central midfielders.

Gibbs-White will spend the next days getting used to his new surroundings.

He will gear up for the Blades’ next game after the international break, which is against Peterborough United on September 11.

Gibbs-White took to Instagram following confirmation of his move, writing: “Excited to join Sheffield United on a season-long loan! Looking forward to meeting my teammates and getting started.”
