Aston Villa and Everton are battling it out to sign James Tarkowski for free – and Wolves must not stand by.
According to a report from The Telegraph, the Toffees are currently at the front of the queue for the centre-half.
They have supposedly offered the 29-year-old a contract worth £90,000-a-week.
Tarkowski has just suffered relegation with Burnley, but the player is leaving Turf Moor with his contract expiring this summer.
Naturally, interest is high in the two-cap England international.
Villa are also chasing the player, who is thought to want to make a decision before he goes on holiday.
One cannot help but think that this is something Wolves need to get involved in.
Wolves were solid defensively for two-thirds of the season, but it has become very clear in recent weeks that Wanderers need a couple of experienced additions.
Romain Saiss appears to be leaving, and Willy Boly is not the same player as a couple of years ago.
Wolves need to get someone in who will immediately improve the backline.
Tarkowski has established himself as a very capable centre-back during Burnley’s time in the Premier League.
He struck up a very good partnership with Ben Mee for the Clarets, and showed fantastic durability, making 194 appearances in the competition to date.
Wolves saw his quality first-hand last month when Tarkowski put in a solid performance at Turf Moor in the Clarets’ 1-0 win.
If Wolves are wanting to splash the cash on other areas of the team, it will be important to seal a couple of bargains here and there and Tarkowski would certainly represent that.
Wolves need to join Aston Villa and Everton in race to sign James Tarkowski for free
Tarkowski is a proven performer in the Premier League, and he is available on a free transfer.
Wolves are crying out for a new centre-half with good experience, and it feels like a no-brainer that the club should be in for him.
Wanderers were linked with Tarkowski last summer, with the Telegraph reporting the club were considering a move.
So it could be that there is some interest there.
But Wolves may need to get a move on. Villa have already landed Boubacar Kamara, another player who had been linked with Wanderers.
And it seems Everton are very keen having offered a contract.
It would seem like a major opportunity missed if Wolves didn’t at least try to make a move.
