Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a fresh approach for Wolves star Adama Traore – and could offer Matt Doherty as a sweetener.
Wolves were able to keep Traore out of their clutches on that occasion.
But time is running out for Wolves if they want the 25-year-old to sign a new contract.
His value will likely drop significantly, and so Wolves are forced to consider selling.
It is estimated his current value is around £20 million. That is much lower than a couple of years ago.
Apparently, Spurs ‘would be willing to let Doherty return to Wolves to make up part of the fee’.
Doherty, of course, left Molineux in 2020 to join the north London outfit in a move that has not really worked out for the Republic of Ireland international.
Doherty has failed to establish himself as a regular, and Spurs signed Emerson Royal in the last window.
One might have thought he’d have a better experience playing under Antonio Conte, who is known for using wing-backs.
Doherty has made six appearances since the Italian’s arrival, but has again failed to convince.
Some Wolves fans react to claim Tottenham could offer Matt Doherty for Adama Traore
On social media, some fans have been reacting to The Athletic’s claim that Tottenham could throw Matt Doherty into any offer for Adama Traore.
Doherty was a great player for Wolves back in the day.
But the club have moved on, and now have a top player on their hands with Nelson Semedo.
The Portugal international is playing his best football since his arrival after Doherty’s departure in 2020.
And then Ki-Jana Hoever is another option for Bruno Lage. The young Dutchman has big potential, and has done well when filling in for Semedo.
Here’s what some fans have made of the Doherty claim:
Doherty absolutely not. I am thankful for what he did for Wolves but he should not be coming back. Semedo is playing out of his skin at the moment. Doherty at his age would want first team football, simply something he won’t get with us now.

Doherty makes no sense unless Semedo is on the way out, even then it’s a step backwards https://t.co/mVlaFoiz1u
