Steve Bull has suggested Wolves playing 4-4-2 will potentially help Matheus Cunha to thrive.
The January signing from Atletico Madrid hasn’t quite hit the ground running yet at Molineux.
He has shown glimpses of his quality.
But he arguably hasn’t looked all that comfortable when asked to lead the line on his own.
Cunha is viewed as a striker by Wolves, who has the capacity to play out wide. But throughout his career, most of his success has come when he’s played off a main striker.
Against Fulham on Friday, Cunha was deployed in attack with Raul Jimenez.
And it was a combination that worked well at Craven Cottage, with Jimenez much more experienced in terms of leading the line.
Cunha played in and around him, and probably had one of his best games so far.
Molineux legend Bull believes playing 4-4-2 is the way to go in order to get the best out of the Brazilian.
He said (Express & Star): “Goals are still a problem and as an old ex-footballer, I still like to see the traditional 4-4-2, which might help Matheus Cunha and the strikers.
“When you play one up front they have to work their socks off and grab your opportunity when you get one, but Cunha isn’t getting many chances at the moment.
“His work rate has been excellent and he needs to focus on getting in the right positions at the right times to score the goals and eventually one will come along.”
Matheus Cunha could really benefit from 4-4-2 system, as fans await injury update
Bull’s suggestion that a 4-4-2 will help get the best out of Cunha is probably right.
He looked much better playing with Jimenez against Fulham, and that might be the way to go moving foward.
But Cunha, of course, did go off injured against the Cottagers and fans are waiting for an update.
It might be that he’s set for a spell on the sidelines.
If that is the case then hopefully he won’t be out for too long and he can come back and play in a 4-4-2 again.
