Wolves didn’t get up to much on transfer deadline day after getting all their business done early. But a few players that were linked with the club still made moves to the Premier League – and one of those players is Paul Onuachu, who joined Southampton.
Wolves ended January with six new signings.
The board really backed Julen Lopetegui in his first transfer window as Wolves manager.
Matheus Cunha, Mario Lemina, Pablo Sarabia, Craig Dawson, Dan Bentley and Joao Gomes are the new faces at Molineux, and many fans are very happy with what the club did.
Some have suggested that maybe an out-and-out striker should have come in.
But Wanderers apparently feel Cunha is up to the task of scoring goals.
One man the club reportedly took a look at last summer was Onuachu.
The striker had interest from the likes of Lazio, Fiorentina, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Besiktas. But in the end he stayed with his club Genk.
Onuachu actually admitted later that a move to Wolves just didn’t materialise.
Wolves instead signed Sasa Kalajdzic. But the Austrian then suffered an ACL injury on his debut. He is now out for the season.
There were no reports of Wolves potentially going back in for Onuachu last month. But the 28-year-old will now be playing in the Premier League.
On deadline day, he sealed an £18 million move to Wolves’ relegation rivals Southampton.
There were some Wolves fans on social media on deadline day who expressed their discomfort at the move.
Onuachu had a fantastic record at Genk, scoring 85 goals in 134 games. This season for the Belgian side, he’d scored 17 goals in 22 games.
Only time will tell if Wolves should have signed Paul Onuachu, as striker prepares for Premier League life with Southampton
This transfer deal is very interesting from a Wolves perspective.
Supposedly he was a player that was on the club’s radar. And Onuachu seemingly confirmed the interest himself.
But in the end, Wolves went for Kalajdzic and that proved to be a disastrous decision.
Wolves seemingly didn’t feel compelled to go in for Onuachu last month, and only time will tell whether that was the right decision or not.
It will be fascinating to see how he gets on at Southampton.
The hope for Wolves – given Southampton are currently a relegation rival – is that he will not be able to hit the ground running.
