Julen Lopetegui praises Yassine Bono amid Wolves transfer links

Julen Lopetegui has praised Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bono, amid speculation linking him with a move to Molineux.

The Wolves head coach recently conducted an interview with Koora, and was asked about his former stopper.

There has been talk of Wolves going in for a new goalkeeper this summer.

Jose Sa did not live up to expectation in 2022/23, after a superb first campaign at Molineux.

It was always going to be a challenge for Sa to do as well as he did in 2021/22.

But he really did struggle. And since the end of the season just gone, it has been suggested that Wolves could sell the Portuguese.

The £7 million star was one of a number of players mentioned as a possible outgoing, against the backdrop of those FFP issues.

And Lopetegui’s comments about Bono may now add fuel to the fire.

Last December, Bono was linked with a move to Wolves.

The links followed the star’s fantastic performances at the World Cup, which saw him help Morocco reach the semi-finals.

Bono excelled between the sticks. And he made headlines for saving two penalties against Spain in the Round of 16.

Speaking about Bono, Lopetegui said: “Bono is a very good goalkeeper. He started playing at the highest level with me years ago. He is mentally and technically balanced. I don’t know if he’s the best now or not, but he has great potential.”

Bono has been with Sevilla since 2019, joining the club on loan at first after being relegated with Girona. He initially played as a number two.

He has enjoyed a really successful time at the club, making 140 appearances and winning the Europa League twice. In each of those Europa League wins, he was named in the Team of the Tournament.

Bono would be a brilliant signing for Wolves

It is interesting to hear Lopetegui praise publicly a player that has been linked with the club.

Normally, he stays well away from talking about players from other clubs.

It’s clear he really likes Bono.

It would be no surprise if he instructed Wolves officials to launch a pursuit of him.

He really is a top goalkeeper, and someone who is seriously good at saving penalties which is an added attraction.

It’s just a case of whether Wolves would be able to afford such a player, who is in demand and in his prime.

He’s still got two years left on his contract at Sevilla.

That being said, it was recently reported (Radio MARCA) that Sevilla do have some financial problems of their own and are needing to sell players this summer. They actually do mention Bono as someone who could be sold to offset debt.
