Former Wolves target Moussa Dembele to leave Lyon as free agent

Moussa Dembele is leaving Lyon at the end of the season as a free agent, which is something that might alert Wolves.

The striker will be playing for a new club next term, with renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano making the claim yesterday on Twitter.

He said: “Moussa Dembélé will leave Olympique Lyon as free agent in the summer. No doubts, decision made and to be confirmed at the end of the season. Many clubs are keen on signing him on free deal; Serie A and Premier League clubs included. Race is still very open.”

A number of other outlets and journalist have also report Dembele is leaving the French club.

The 26-year-old joined Lyon back in 2018 from Celtic for just under £20 million.

He has clocked up 171 appearances for the club, and scored 71 goals and made 19 assists.

Last summer, it was claimed Wolves held an interest in Dembele. Foot Mercato reported Fulham, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United all made enquiries. Everton were mentioned as being keen, too.

This was before Wolves made a move for Sasa Kalajdzic.

It is possible that Wolves may look to reignite their interest in Dembele.

There have been suggestions that Raul Jimenez and Diego Costa could both be leaving the club this summer.

Jimenez has not made Wolves’ matchday squad for the last three games now. Supposedly, he has interest from clubs in the MLS and his old team Club America. Their president revealed he spoke to Jimenez around the time of the World Cup.

Costa’s contract with Wolves expires at the end of the season.

Some want to see him be given an extension. But there are no guarantees Wolves will want to keep him around.

Moussa Dembele on a free could be a smart move by Wolves

There haven’t been any reports recently suggesting Wolves might like to move for Dembele.

But the club should surely be taking a look at him.

If the plan is to move both Jimenez and Costa on in the summer, there will be a need for another centre-forward.

Kalajdzic will be back available for 2023/24, and Fabio Silva may also be brought back into the fold by Julen Lopetegui. But surely one more would be needed.

Dembele hasn’t had the most productive of seasons this time around, having scored just three goals.

But his overall record for Lyon is decent, and he was also prolific in Scotland.

He’s played in the Premier League before with Fulham. But he’s a more mature player now and could be someone worth considering.
