Wolves transfer news: Wolves showed interest in Lyon striker Moussa Dembele

Wolves have reportedly shown interest in Moussa Dembele – but his plan is to stay at Lyon.

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Wanderers are one of a few clubs to have expressed an interest in the 26-year-old.

Dembele is one of a number of players at Lyon to have just one year remaining on his contract.

Club officials, including recruitment manager Bruno Cheyrou, have told these players to either extend their contracts of prepare to be sold.

Dembele has been with Lyon since 2018, joining from Celtic in a £19.7 million deal (BBC Sport).

He’s enjoyed a pretty fruitful spell with Les Gones, scoring 67 goals in 143 games. He’s also laid on 18 assists for teammates.

Dembele’s stature at Lyon appeared to be on the wane early last year. In January 2021, he was loaned out to Atletico Madrid, where he made seven appearances.

But Dembele returned to Lyon ahead of the 2021/22 season, and he enjoyed a good campaign, scoring 22 goals in 35 games in all competitions.

Interestingly for Dembele though, Lyon recently re-signed Alexandre Lacazette, which potentially impacts the amount of minutes he’ll get this season.

Foot Mercato say several teams have made approaches for Dembele this summer, including Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico, Villarreal, Juventus, Fulham, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, Everton and Wolves.

But the outlet states that Dembele’s current intention is to remain at Lyon.

They have presented an offer of a contract extension to the player, and he is mulling it over.

Moussa Dembele would make a great signing for Wolves

It would seem Wolves’ chances of landing Moussa Dembele in the next couple of weeks are low, if Foot Mercato’s information is accurate.

But there are always twists and turns in the transfer window.

Dembele would potentially make for a really good addition for Wolves.

Back in 2016, Pep Guardiola said of Dembele (via Daily Record): “If you read the newspapers in the last six months, since I became a coach at Manchester City maybe I have had contact with 126 players.

“Dembele is another one. But the quality in Dembele is there. He is an exceptional player.”

He’s enjoyed a good career since that high praise, and the star could be a good addition for Wanderers with his physicality and finishing.

But it does seems like a move to Molineux would be hugely unlikely. Maybe Ludovic Ajorque or Hwang Ui-jo would be more likely signings.
