Wonderkid Wolves abandoned plans to sign in 2021 is now playing in the Greek league

Renato Sanches was the talk of the town in 2016, winning the Golden Boy award, and emerging as one of the best wonderkids around, and in 2021, he nearly signed for Wolves.

After joining Bayern Munich in 2016, he struggled to live up to those expectations, being sent on loan to Swansea in 2017, before later being sold to Ligue 1 club Lille.

It was at Lille that he recaptured the form that got him his move to Germany, but constant injury problems would keep him out for large portions of each season.

Lille looked to get rid of the Portuguese midfielder, and in 2021, Wolves were heavily interested in signing him under Bruno Lage, and the deal got quite advanced.

But a move for Renato Sanches collapsed at the final hurdle, and he later joined PSG.

Ever since, Sanches has barely played for the French side, and keeps getting sent on loan with his latest move highlighting whether Wolves were right in their decision.

Former Wolves target Renato Sanches joins Greek side Panathinaikos on loan

When Renato Sanches popped up in 2016, the last thing you would have expected the talented midfielder to do was find himself in the Greek league.

He was touted to make it to the very top, winning league titles and playing for Champions League level teams.

However, now, he is set to play his football for Panathinaikos, a result of a career filled with overbearing expectations and injury problems.

At the time, the prospect of signing Renato Sanches excited fans of the Wanderers, and in the end, the failed move came to disappoint them.

But in hindsight, it may have turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Wolves.

Wolves dodged a bullet by abandoning Renato Sanches move

Life could have been very different for Sanches. In 2021, Wolves moved for him, and the deal got extremely close to completion.

But Sanches picked up an injury before the deal was finalised, and the Old Gold decided to step away that summer.

Interest remained, and in the winter reports of Wolves coming back in for Sanches materialised, but nothing ever came to fruition.

The type of player the now 28-year-old is would have been transformative for Wolves back then. His ball carrying and ability to drive through the lines would have complemented Ruben Neves perfectly.

But looking back, Wolves will be happy they dodged this bullet, as since moving for him, the player has had 16 different injuries.
