Wolves striker Leonardo Campana continued his great form with Inter Miami at the weekend – and Wanderers may be regretting agreeing to insert an option to buy for the American outfit.
The star was on target once again for David Beckham’s MLS franchise, this time against Portland Timbers in a 2-1 win.
The 22-year-old arrived in the box to head home Christopher McVey’s dinked cross to open the scoring just before the half-hour mark.
That was his seventh of the MLS campaign. He had also hit three for Grasshoppers, whom he started the season with.
Following the game, Campana then got called up by the Ecuador national team, meaning he’ll have a chance to add three caps to his current tally of 10.
Speaking afterwards, he said (via Miami Herald): “I feel really proud, first of all because Inter Miami is going in the right path; and individually, it’s very important for a striker to score and this wouldn’t be possible without my teammates and I’m very grateful for them.
“As for my call up, it’s a pleasure and honor to represent your national team. I’ve worked really hard to be called up, so I’m really happy.”
It has been a really great start to life in the States for Campana, who is absolutely adored by his managed Phil Neville.
Neville has routinely praised him, and after the game against Portland he said: “When you meet Leo you fall in love with him because his personality, his nature, he’s the politest most humble boy.
“He’s obviously been brought up the right way and he’s scoring goals. He’s highly thought of and there’s so much growth left in him.”
Campana is set to be with Miami until early October, which is when the MLS season finishes this year.
The club will then decide whether to sign Campana permanently since they hold and option to buy. And potentially, it could be a frustrating situation for Wolves.
Wolves may come to regret negotiating option to buy clause for Inter Miami over Leonardo Campana
Campana is really enjoying himself over in the US.
One wonders if Wolves might have been a little bit hasty agreeing to an option to buy clause.
There is obviously a huge difference in standard between the MLS and the Premier League. But Campana is developing nicely.
It would be a real shame to see Campana leave Wolves without ever being given a proper chance.
Especially if he is still in great form come the end of his loan stint.
We’ve seen how Rafa Mir left Wolves after thriving on loan at Las Palmas. He joined Sevilla last year, and hit 13 goals in his first season with the club.
