SL Benfica v Rio Ave FC - Liga Portugal Bwin

Wolves may wish they'd pushed harder to sign Goncalo Ramos from Benfica

Wolves’ goalscoring problems this season have been well documented – and Goncalo Ramos’ form over in Portugal is starting to become difficult to ignore.

Wanderers have found the net just three times in their first nine Premier League games so far. And they hit a further two against Preston North End in the Carabao Cup.

It is a very alarming situation.

Bruno Lage did get unlucky regarding the lack of a fit and firing centre-forward.

But he still had a lot of brilliant attacking players at his disposal, and he really ought to have achieved more.

In the summer, after loaning Fabio Silva to Anderlecht and then losing Raul Jimenez to injury, Wolves went and signed Sasa Kalajdzic from Stuttgart.

The move was praised, but some did express concerns given the player’s history with knee injuries.

The Austria international then went and injured his ACL during his debut against Southampton.

He’s now out for the foreseeable future.

Wolves were hoping he would be the answer to this long-standing goalscoring issue.

One man who is looking like he really could have been just that for Wolves is Goncalo Ramos, who was heavily linked with Wanderers just before a deal for Kalajdzic was signed off.

Apparently, Wolves had contact with Ramos regarding a potential loan move to Molineux, with an option to buy.

Ultimately nothing materialised and perhaps inevitably, he has started the new season on fire.

On Saturday he was at the double against Rio Ave for Benfica, taking his total to 10 goals across all competitions already. Six of those have come in the league, with four coming in Champions League qualifying.

His first was a tap in, but he was in that penalty box waiting for the opportunity.

His equaliser, though, was superbly taken; controlling a lofted through ball from Enzo Fernandez on his right knee, before tucking away quickly and clinically with his left foot.

Goncalo Ramos looks like the one that got away for Wolves, officials surely wish they’d tried harder to land him

Ramos looks very much the real deal for Benfica.

He is a constant threat for Roger Schmidt’s side, and has taken 27 shots at goal so far in his eight league matches (via BBC Sport).

Who knows how close Wolves really came to ever signing Ramos. Supposedly, Benfica were willing to sell for a fee of at least £25 million in the last window.

But it’s very possible the club may have missed the boat. His market value will be much, much higher than £25 million now.

He’s showing signs of becoming a top player and if he continues in this manner, he is going to have all the top clubs across Europe on his tail.
