Three decisions Gary O’Neil must make before Wolves vs Nottingham Forest

Wolves face Nottingham Forest on Saturday with manager Gary O’Neil having plenty of big decisions to make in preparation for the Premier League fixture.

Wolves bounced back from consecutive defeats on Tuesday with a professional 1-0 victory over Burnley.

Hwang Hee-Chan netted the only goal of the game as Molineux once again showed it might.

O’Neil has really got his side ticking of late, with early fears of relegation all but vanished.

However, Saturday’s visitors Nottingham Forest are at risk of being pulled into a battle for survival after their recent poor form.

Manager Steve Cooper is on the brink of the sack coming into the game with the East Midlands side in real need of a win.

In preparation for what will no doubt be a tough battle, here are three decisions O’Neil must make ahead of the fixture.

Dan Bentley to hold off Jose Sa?

Dan Bentley has got the nod over recent games in between the sticks.

Jose Sa’s injury against Arsenal forced him off the field and he was unable to make a full recovery in time for Tuesday night’s game against Burnley.

In the meantime, Bentley has been fantastic.

Despite Arsenal dominating the early periods last weekend, the ‘keeper came on and ensured the hosts didn’t score again.

Then, against Burnley, Bentley held firm again and kept Wolves’ first clean sheet since August.

During the game, he also pulled off a stunning double save to keep the scores level just before Hwang’s opener.

With the expectation that Sa should be fit for Nottingham Forest, O’Neil will have to decide whether to drop Bentley for his usual number one.

It would be considerably harsh to drop the ‘keeper especially as Sa has been unreliable lately.

Should Pablo Sarabia start?

The Spaniard started his first Wolves game in a long time against Burnley on Tuesday night.

His return to the starting XI comes after a series of good cameos off the bench.

The most memorable of these was against Spurs where he changed the game late on by netting the equaliser before setting up Mario Lemina’s winner.

While he may not have had that amount of influence in the last game, he was still part of a side that comfortably beat Burnley.

However, there is a question to be had if he is more impactful off the bench late on.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde was benched for the attacker in the week while there is also hope that both Pedro Neto and Rayan Ait-Nouri may be back for the weekend’s game.

With three players who have had a better season than Sarabia waiting to return to the pitch, it calls into question whether Sarabia should keep his starting spot.

Two or three attackers to start?

O’Neil played a front three last time out for the first time since Bournemouth away against Burnley.

The manager usually opts to have a midfield trio on either side of the wingbacks.

However, Tuesday saw a 3-4-3 formation used against the Clarets which paid off.

With Nottingham Forest under pressure to get a result, O’Neil may be tempted to revert to a 3-5-2 in order to secure the midfield.

The addition of a player like Boubacar Traore could help lock down the middle of the park until creative players are added to the field later in the game.

This tactic has worked for Wolves throughout the season with the substitutes earning victories against Everton, Bournemouth and Spurs.

It is just a case of whether O’Neil wants to change a winning formation.
