Wolverhampton Wanderers are said to be keen on signing Neco Williams.

That was the claim recently from Goal, who also reported interest from Southampton and Leeds United.

The report follows on from transfer links to the player last year – supposedly, Wolves gave consideration to signing the full-back before landing Ki-Jana Hoever.

Simply put, Wolves should not be attempting to bring the Wales international to Molineux this summer.

Unfortunately, Williams has produced a number of shaky performances since coming into the Liverpool first-team.

One of the 2020/21 season’s most memorable results was when Aston Villa beat Liverpool 7-2 in October.

Williams started that night, and it was a torrid experience for the youngster.

At Euro 2020 for Wales, he was somewhat at fault for Denmark’s second goal, clearing across his own box right into the path of Kasper Dolberg.

Williams is decent on the attacking front, but the defensive side of his game looks to need a bit of work right now.

Perhaps he needs a loan move to allow him to play more regularly.

The more he plays, the more likely it is he’ll iron out those lapses.

Wolves don’t need Williams anyway

Wolves don’t need to be going after another right-back.

If there is admiration because Williams can also play left-back, then Ki-Jana Hoever can also do that.

Williams is said to be valued at £10 million.

That’s £10 million that could be put to much better use – perhaps into a potential deal for James Tarkowski or another experienced defender.

At the moment Williams is raw – perhaps he can be someone to look at after he gains more experience and there is an actual need for the club to sign a new right-back.
