Wolves are currently having real difficulty scoring goals – something former transfer target Gaetan Laborde is not.
The club are going well under Bruno Lage, with the defence clearly the most impressive aspect of the team.
Only Chelsea and Manchester City have conceded fewer league goals so far.
Romain Saiss, Max Kilman and Conor Coady have all been superb this season, as has new signing Jose Sa in goal.
But at the other end of the pitch, goals have been scarce.
MORE WOLVES STORIES
Just 13 in the league so far is a paltry tally, with only Norwich City scoring fewer.
Wolves have been quite wasteful at times, because in some games Wolves did create many chances.
It just boils down to lacking that cutting edge in front of goal.
One man who has certainly been showing that throughout 2021 is Gaetan Laborde, who was linked with Wolves during the last winter transfer window.
Laborde has enjoyed a fine calendar year. He has scored 15 for Montpellier and 11 so far for new club Rennes, whom he joined on August 31.
That makes 26 and counting for the 27-year-old, who genuinely looks like one that got away for Wolves.
Wolves may have missed the boat over Gaetan Laborde
It is difficult to see Laborde regularly finding the net after Wolves were linked with a move for him.
It was claimed Wolves were eyeing Laborde last January. Ultimately the club swooped to sign Willian Jose on loan instead. That move did not turn out very well at all.
Wolves then didn’t move for Laborde in the summer, with the player going to Rennes, where he has hit the ground immediately.
Interestingly, Wolves were actually linked with Laborde again at the start of the month. Supposedly, the club could make a play for him in the summer of 2022.
Given the way he has been playing recently, he could end up costing a fortune by then.
It’s possible Wolves may well have some regrets over Laborde if they were indeed keen this time a year ago.
