Could Toti Gomes' Wolves emergence be bad news for Willy Boly?

Wolves beat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday to keep up their 100% record in 2022 so far.

It was a great result for Wanderers, against a side who really applied the pressure at times in the match.

Raul Jimenez, Conor Coady and Adama Traore were the scorers for the home side, who bagged three goals in a league match for the first time this season.

It was a day full of positives, perhaps the biggest being the Premier League debut of Toti Gomes.

Gomes returned to Wolves from Grasshoppers recently, with the Swiss league currently on a winter break.

He was named as a shock starter, with Lage saying afterwards that he didn’t want to move Leander Dendoncker out of the midfield (via Shropshire Star).

It turned out to be a good call from the manager, with Gomes looking completely at ease in the backline.

One wonders if the emergence of Gomes could be something which hastens the exit of Willy Boly from the club.

The Ivory Coast international has made just one appearance so far this season, having had more trouble with his fitness.

A recent report claimed the club would listen to offers for the star.

Gomes’ emergence would have been something few people would have seen coming.

And it could be something which spells further frustration for Boly, with Dion Sanderson also back at the club after a loan spell with Birmingham City.

Gomes could make a renaissance difficult for Boly

It is obviously early days, but it was a very encouraging display from Gomes on Saturday against Southampton.

He really looked as though he’d already played many games in the Premier League.

Lage hasn’t ruled out keeping Gomes around the Wolves first-team for the rest of the season (via Tim Spiers/The Athletic).

If Gomes does stay, and builds on his display against the Saints, then it could make life very difficult for Boly.

Of course, Romain Saiss will soon be back from AFCON, and he’ll likely go straight back into the team.

Max Kilman continues to go from strength to strength, and Sanderson is also there as an option now. Yerson Mosquera is also due to return next month.

The last thing he needed was for someone else (Gomes) to come from out of the blue. It will be very interesting to see how things pan out from here.
