Chiquinho deserves to start for Wolves against Manchester City

One of the biggest positives for Wolves on Saturday – besides obviously coming from 2-0 down to draw with Chelsea – was the cameo performance of Chiquinho. And the 22-year-old surely now deserves to start in the next game against Manchester City.

Wanderers looked as though they were heading for a fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku had put Chelsea two goals to the good at Stamford Bridge.

Wolves’ record for coming from behind and taking points this season has been awful.

Previously, the team have only managed to take points against Aston Villa when losing.

But it happened at the Bridge – and Chiquinho’s impact was hugely significant for Wolves.

He entered the action on 70 minutes, replacing Romain Saiss with Wolves changing to a back four.

And with that change along with the introduction of Francisco Trincao moments later, helped Wolves mount their comeback.

It was a Chiquinho who released Trincao down the right, before the winger went on to score a stunning goal with his left foot.

And then, of course, deep in injury-time, Chiquinho produced an exquisite cross for Conor Coady to score the equaliser.

Chiquinho’s contributions have actually now taken him to joint-top of the Wolves assists charts this season.

That is quite remarkable, considering he has made just seven appearances for the Wolves first-team and that he only has 66 minutes of Premier League football to his name.

It was an excellent cameo, and one that, really, should result in his first Wolves start against Manchester City on Wednesday.

Wolves winger Chiquinho deserves to start against Manchester City

Chiquinho has looked lively whenever he has taken to the field for the Wolves first-team.

It is clear he has huge potential, and the January signing from Estoril seems hell-bent on making an impression early doors.

He’s already come in for praise from Bruno Lage, who said the youngster ‘comes with everything’ and that others needed to follow his example.

It would be a big deal to throw him in against the reigning Premier League champions.

But Chiquinho doesn’t seemed fazed. If he can produce against Chelsea like he did, then why can’t he have an impact against City?

Surely he now deserves a chance to impress from the start. Perhaps he could feature down the right with Pedro Neto on the left.

Lage might be foolish to ignore him any longer for his first start.
