Wolves youngster Yerson Mosquera earns call-up to Colombia national team amid positive development

Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera has been called up the Colombia national team for only the second time, and the first since early 2021.

The centre-back’s recent performances on loan at FC Cincinnati have caught the attention of manager Néstor Lorenzo, and he now stands to actually make his senior debut for the South American nation.

Colombia’s next two games are friendlies against Iraq and Germany later this month.

It is a brilliant moment for Mosquera, who had a frustrating time at Wolves before leaving the club on loan in January.

Just a couple of months after joining the club from Atletico Nacional, Mosquera suffered a bad hamstring injury that required him to undergo surgery.

He missed a big chunk of his first season as a result.

He returned around February 2022, but Bruno Lage did not give him any more minutes with the first-team.

Mosquera was then actually set to leave Wolves in the summer of 2023. French club Troyes wanted to take him on loan.

But the move was dependent on Wolves signing another centre-half.

They had wanted Craig Dawson, but West Ham United ended up blocking the move because they couldn’t replace him. Mosquera was forced to stay put as a result.

Wolves then signed Dawson in January, allowing Mosquera to finally leave on loan.

And he’s made a real impression over in the States. He’s played 17 games for Cincinnati so far, and been on the winning side 13 times. He’s suffered defeat just once. And he’s been a part of eight clean sheets.

Promising signs over Yerson Mosquera as Wolves youngster receives Colombia call-up

This is great to see and Wolves officials are bound to be delighted.

Mosquera was so unlucky last season with his injury. He looked very impressive in the pre-season just after he signed.

It hasn’t happened for him so far at Wolves but it looks as though he has been progressing really well.

The main thing is that he has been playing regularly and building his fitness and sharpness.

It remains to be seen what happens with Mosquera this summer. It has been mentioned that he could stay on loan with Cincinnati beyond the summer.

But it was recently suggested that Julen Lopetegui really likes the 22-year-old a lot. Perhaps the Spaniard might fancy bringing him back if he feels he might be ready for Premier League football.
