Wolves striker Raul Jimenez scored his first international goal in over a year, as Mexico beat Guatemala 2-0 last night.

El Tri were taking on Guatemala in a friendly match at Estadio de Mazatlan.

It was a game to prepare them for a busy next few weeks.

Mexico have another friendly against Cameroon on Sunday, before facing the USA in a CONCACAF Nations League semi-final.

Mexico then take on Honduras, Haiti and Qatar in their three CONCACAF Gold Cup matches.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez scores for Mexico for the first time since March 2022

Last night, Wolves striker Jimenez managed to get on the scoresheet for Mexico for the first time since he scored against El Salvador all the way back in March 2022. That was a World Cup qualifier.

Jimenez gave Mexico the lead after 14 minutes, converting a penalty to send the goalkeeper the wrong way. Speaking after the game, head coach Diego Cocca, who replaced Gerard Martino in February, said (via ESPN MX): “We gave Raul the captaincy, and we put him to play because we want to recover him, he scored a goal and was the captain.”

That was actually Jimenez’s first goal in football since November 2022.

Jimenez’s last goal for club or country came for Wolves in that feisty game with Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The £30 million star tapped in Matheus Cunha’s cross at the back post.

Wolves, of course, went on to lose that tie on penalties.

Good to see Raul Jimenez back on the scoresheet, as star bags first goal for Mexico in 15 months against Guatemala

It is crazy to think that Jimenez had not scored for Mexico for over a year.

That just highlights the struggles he has had in recent times.

Hopefully he is now able to kick on from this. Obviously club football is now finished but it would be great to see him making an impact for his country.

The star will probably be determined to put himself in the shop window.

It has been reported recently that he wants to leave Wolves, rather than see about the final year of his contract.

Apparently he’s got offers on the table from some Saudi Pro League clubs at the moment.
