Old Gold fans will be glad to watch some football this summer that isn’t Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the World Cup getting underway in just a few weeks time.
It has been a disastrous season for Wanderers, with the club suffering relegation weeks ago.
How much would you love to see Ruben Neves return to Wolves one day?
The former captain has eft the door open…
The November appointment of Rob Edwards was not enough to stop Wolves from dropping, but the hierarchy now hope he can guide the club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
He’ll need his superiors to come through for him during the summer, with strong recruitment essential.
But as they work away behind the scenes fans can sink their teeth into the 2026 World Cup.
And those who tune in to watch Portugal will be seeing plenty of familiar faces.
Portugal squad is stacked with former Wolves players

Roberto Martinez has now named his final squad for the World Cup in North America.
Just one Wolves player has made it in, in the form of goalkeeper Jose Sa, who is unlikely to actually play.
But Portugal’s squad is inundated with players who used to sport the old gold shirt.
There are inclusions from Roberto Martinez for:
- Matheus Nunes
- Nelson Semedo
- Ruben Neves
- Vitinha
- Pedro Neto
- Francisco Trincao
- Goncalo Guedes
Portugal also made a classy gesture of including Diogo Jota at the bottom of their squad list. The former Wolves man tragically passed away last July.
Some serious quality has passed through Wolves
Wolves are now preparing for a new era after their eight-year spell in the Premier League, but this list of players will do little to improve the mood of fans.
It is remarkable to think that Wolves’ squad had these players in it at one point.
Some players on that list did not have successful stints at Molineux. The likes of Vitinha, Trincao and Guedes were all deemed poor signings.
But all three have thrived since leaving Wolves, and that certainly puts a spotlight on the club’s ownership.

Guedes’ inclusion may surprise some, given how poor he mostly was for Wolves.
But with 17 goals or assists in 38 appearances this season for Real Sociedad, his inclusion is deserved.
Trincao, who had a loan spell at Wolves in 2021/22, has also shone this term, scoring 13 and making 18 assists for Sporting CP.
