But now the Morocco international has removed all doubt, and informed supporters of his decision to depart the club after six years.

Taking to social media, he wrote a heartfelt goodbye message.

He said: “The moment I feared the most has come…. The moment to say goodbye to you after 6 wonderful years with you.

It was an honour and a privilege to wear these colours and to contribute to the success and renewal of this club.

“I have met exceptional people over these 6 years, always looking out for me and my family.

“Thanks to the fans for your support despite the ups and downs, you’ve always been behind me.

“Thank you to the various people working at the club for your kindness on a daily basis.

“Thank you to the various technical and medical staff for your work, for having been an important part of our success.

“Finally, thank you to all the players that I consider as a family. A wardrobe of exceptional men that I will never forget.

“Thank you Wolves, I’ll be a wolf forever.”

Saiss leaves the club having signed for £3 million in 2016. He was signed shortly after Fosun acquired the club.

The star clocked up 206 appearances for the club in total, his final one coming in the dramatic 2-2 draw with Chelsea earlier this month.

Injury prevented him from playing in any of the final three matches.

In recent weeks, there have been reports of interest from other clubs in Saiss, including most recently Barcelona.

He may have had his limitations, and had the potential to make a mistake. But Saiss always played with real heart.

As one of the leaders of the dressing room, he will be a big miss.
