Player who Wolves sold for £500k says he should’ve played way more at Molineux

Connor Ronan has expressed his frustration about his lack of minutes at Wolves just before leaving the club in January to head to the MLS.

The 25-year-old departed Molineux in January of this year, after a nine-year spell with the club.

Ronan had several loan spells after making his debut for Wolves back in December 2016.

His best came at St Mirren, with the midfielder being named their Player of the Season after a brilliant campaign up in Scotland.

After that season, Ronan was then looked at in pre-season by Bruno Lage. The manager decided to keep him around, but barely played him and Ronan left Wolves in January 2023 to join Colorado Rapids in a £500,000 deal.

Ronan has now been speaking about his exit from the club…

Ronan has appeared on the Wolves Weekly podcast to talk about how his exit from Wolves came about.

He discusses the St Mirren loan and how he was then at a crossroads. He felt as though it was his last chance to become a Wolves first-teamer, and knew he had to really make an impression in pre-season.

He did that, and Lage kept him around, but Ronan was only handed a one-minute cameo against Brighton in November, and was given just one further appearance against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup.

Ronan said on his lack of minutes: “In my opinion, I did enough in that pre-season to warrant being kept around. Obviously, no matter what the level, I was on the bench most weeks in the Premier League but just not getting any minutes. You’ve got to be happy with just being around that kind of environment.

“I think that frustration is always going to come with a lack of game time, whatever level it’s at. I would say that period I’ve just had at Wolves was maybe my most frustrating. Not that I felt that I should have been playing every week. I just wanted that chance to prove myself, I never stopped trying in training, I was always giving 100% which I like to think that people would say about me as well.”

Ronan deserved more chances at Wolves

Ronan comes across really well in his chat with Mikey Burrows and it’s clear he is extremely grateful to Wolves.

It is interesting to hear him speak about his exit from the club. Arguably, he should have been given a lot more chances by Lage, Steve Davis and Julen Lopetegui.

Wolves had made a really bad start to the 2022/23 season and there was definitely scope for players who weren’t playing so much to come into the side.

Ronan had obviously just come back from an outstanding loan spell with St Mirren, and it was actually a bit of a travesty that he was only handed two appearances for Wolves in 2022/23 before he left halfway through.
