Joao Moutinho praises Joao Gomes after dream Wolves debut against Southampton

Wolves had suffered in the game.

Carlos Alcaraz had put Southampton 1-0 up in the first-half.

The visitors then lost Mario Lemina, who picked up a very controversial second booking from referee Jarred Gillett.

But Julen Lopetegui made some bold changes and instructed his team to just go for it.

His positivity resulted in Wolves getting back into it, with Adama Traore forcing an own goal from Jan Bednarek.

And then young Gomes stepped up.

He latched onto a loose ball and surged forward to the edge of the penalty area.

His first effort was blocked. But he then shaped his body nicely and angled a curling effort into the top corner.

It was a wonderful finish, and an absolutely dream start to his Wolves career.

After the game, Moutinho lavished praise on the youngster (The Athletic): “(Joao Gomes) brings a lot of things. He is a young guy with a lot of quality. He’s aggressive, he wants the ball, he wants to play the ball and today he had a great finish.

“But when he comes into the game, the important thing is that he – not only him, the others too – brought a lot of energy and that’s why we won.”

Gomes also came in for high praise from captain Ruben Neves, and his manager Julen Lopetegui.

Gomes could not have asked for a better start to life at Wolves.

It was a brilliant goal from him that could be absolutely massive for Wolves come the end of the season.

But the rest of his cameo was also impressive.

It’s good that Wolves have someone who can bring that energy in midfield.

Quite possibly, we are going to be seeing him come on in the second-half of games a lot in the coming weeks.

And eventually, the 22-year-old will surely become a starter.
