Wolves had been struggling in the game.

The first-half saw Carlos Alcaraz score for Southampton. Then Mario Lemina was sent off in controversial fashion.

It would take a huge effort to turn things around in the second-half. But that’s what Wolves did.

Adama Traore forced an own goal from Jan Bednarek, and then Gomes would come in clutch for Wolves.

On as a substitute for Matheus Nunes, the Brazilian latched on to a loose ball and came forwards to the edge of the Saints box.

His initial shot was blocked, but he then adjusted to take a second shot, which found the corner.

It was a cracking finish from Gomes, who sent the away fans wild with the goal. It even prompted substitute Pedro Neto come sprinting all the way over from the bench to join the celebrations.

It could not have been a better debut for Gomes, and afterwards Neves showered praise on Wolves’ newest recruit.

He said (Wolves official): “What a finish. He’s a fantastic player and a fantastic guy as well, I’m really happy for him and really proud of him as well.

“But I think everyone is proud of everyone in the club at the moment, Everyone is fighting for the club and that’s the main thing.”

Gomes was already a very popular figure due to his involvement in sealing a £15 million move to Wolves.

But his popularity is now through the roof at Molineux after his wonderful debut.

This was an absolutely huge contribution from a player who hasn’t even been here for two weeks.

It is going to be fantastic to watch him become more involved from here.

Given how behind him Wolves fans are already, it feels as though he could become an absolutely top player for the club.
