Wolves winger Goncalo Guedes was back on the bench last night for Benfica, after his recent knee surgery.
The 26-year-old has missed Benfica’s last five league games.
According to a club statement last month, Guedes underwent ‘arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The intervention took place at Hospital da Luz’.
It had been anticipated that Guedes would be out of action for around six weeks.
Earlier this week, Guedes was pictured in training for Benfica. And last night he was included in Benfica’s squad to face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-final first leg last night.
Guedes did not take to the field, and watched his side lose 2-0 to the Italian giants.
Clearly, he will be lacking match fitness/sharpness at the moment.
Nico Barella opened the scoring, with Romelu Lukaku scoring a late penalty to put Inter in control of the tie.
The return leg takes place next week, and it remains to be seen if Guedes will get any minutes.
Before that though, Benfica are in action this weekend in the league against Chaves.
So far since he moved to his former club in January, Guedes has made seven appearances and scored two goals.
Good news for Wolves with Goncalo Guedes involved against just one month after knee surgery
Guedes being back on the bench last night for Benfica was good to see, if not a little surprising.
The words ‘knee surgery’ are always a little worrying. And initial reports did indicate his season might have been in a bit of jeopardy.
But the recovery process has clearly gone very well and hopefully he can start featuring fairly regularly again.
Wolves ideally need him to put in some really good performances in the coming weeks.
Guedes wasn’t happy at Wolves and so, there’s a good chance the club will be wanting to offload him in the summer. The goal will be to recoup as much of the £27.5 million that was paid to Valencia as possible.
