World Cup winner amongst seven former Wolves targets set to become free agents this summer

Seven former targets, including World Cup winner, whom Wolves may be tempted to pursue this summer with their contracts set to expire.

The summer is now just around the corner for Wolves. It could well be a big window for the Molineux club as Gary O’Neil gets his first proper window and pre-season in Wolverhampton.

Last summer, Wolves were restricted in who they could buy with FFP being a major stumbling block for the club. It is now believed that this issue is resolved. However, sporting director Matt Hobbs sees Wolves becoming more of a self-sustainable side in the future.

This could see less investment in the first team compared to recent years meaning smart buys are vital to continue progressing. Therefore, we have listed eight players Wolves formerly targetted who are set to become free agents this summer.

The Fulham centre-back continues to perform in London after his move from Man City in 2020. The 26-year-old has yet to put pen to paper and extend his deal despite being one of the best players for the capital’s side.

Wolves were originally linked to the defender back in 2021 but this interest was then renewed last summer. With a centre-back set to be one of O’Neil’s priorities in the upcoming window, this interest could well be renewed again.

Alex Berenguer

Berenguer has been a top performer at Athletico Bilbao since he joined the Basque side in 2020. In Spain, he has won the Supercopa but his four-year stay looks set to come to an end.

Wolves have had plenty of attackers linked away this summer. Pedro Neto is said to be valued up to £80 million, with Liverpool and Arsenal circling. Wolves have been linked to Berenguer throughout March and his arrival at Molineux could soon become a reality.

Che Adams

Wolves have been on the hunt for a striker throughout recent seasons and have continuously been linked to Che Adams. Since Southampton were relegated from the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, Molineux has seemed a likely destination for the 27-year-old.

Wolves pursued the striker towards the end of last summer but were unable to get a deal over the line. However, it is now believed that O’Neil’s side are leading the race for his signature.

Guido Rodriguez

Rodriguez was part of the Argentina side that won the World Cup in 2022. Currently contracted to Real Betis, the defensive midfielder has enjoyed a good spell in Spain, winning the Copa del Rey in 2022.

Wolves were linked with the midfielder last summer but nothing came to fruition. However, with Rodriguez very likely to not renew at Betis, it could present an opportunity for O’Neil.

Michy Batshuayi

The former Chelsea striker finally left the Londoners in 2023 and signed for Turkish side Fenerbahce. Across the continent, the Belgian has found good form, netting 41 times across his one-and-a-half seasons.

Wolves have been linked with Batshuayi many times. In 2022, it was believed Wolves made an offer for Batshuayi. However, the 30-year-old never came to Molineux. Could this summer finally be the moment we see him in Old Gold?

Josh Brownhill

Brownhill was heavily linked with Wolves last summer as they looked to boost their depth. The Burnley midfielder was fantastic in the last campaign as he helped the Clarets immediately return to the Premier League.

This season, his luck doesn’t seem to have continued with the newcomers likely to go straight back down. There were reports that Burnley were planning to trigger a one-year extension in November. However, this hasn’t been confirmed.

Kelechi Iheanacho

Leicester City v Leeds United - Sky Bet Championship

Another man who WOlves were heavily linked with in the summer. Iheanacho was clinical in the Premier League until Leicester’s relegation. The striker has found the net 61 times for the Foxes. However, he has found it difficult to adapt to the Championship.

With Leicester facing difficulties off the pitch, Wolves could well take advantage of the situation and swoop in for the 27-year-old. The former Man City man would certainly help bolster the options up top.
