Young Wolves defender Nigel Lonwijk reportedly featured on trial for Rotherham United.

The Dutch centre-back turned out for the Millers in their 3-0 win over League Two Harrogate Town, according to Advertiser Sport.

A number of U23s players were included by Bruno Lage in his 30-man squad that has flown out to Alicante.

It was interesting that Lonwijk was not on that list, but it now makes sense.

According to Rotherham’s official match report, Lonwijk, listed as ‘trialist’, played for around an hour.

The club have another game tonight against Salford City, and Advertiser Sport suggest he may well play a part.

Lonwijk joined Wolves in 2020 from PSV Eindhoven, but is yet to make any appearances for the first-team.

He started off with the U18s, before quickly moving up to the U23s where he impressed for James Collins’ side.

Last season, the club sent him out on loan to Fortuna Sittard, where he made 23 appearances. Upon his arrival there, the club’s Head of Scouting Sjoerd Ars described Lonwijk as ‘a talented defender’.

He enjoyed a productive spell, and ultimately helped the club stay in the Eredivisie by a single point come the end of the season.

It is Lonwijk’s goal to become a member of the first-team at Wolves, saying at the start of this year: “It’s about showing myself and showing people what I could be.

“I would love to play for Wolves first-team someday, but we will have to wait and see.”

Championship move would be a fantastic experience for talented Wolves youngster Nigel Lonwijk

Hopefully, Lonwijk will make an impression during his trial period with Rotherham so that he will secure himself a loan move there.

Potentially, spending time in the Championship could really further his development.

It is a very challenging league, but one that has potentially to really shape younger players.

Lonwijk as lots of potential, and it would be a great learning curve for him to get regular minutes in England’s second tier.
