Wolves warned what Arsenal and Aston Villa could do to sign Matheus Cunha in summer transfer window

Wolves fans were left delighted recently when Matheus Cunha signed a new contract.

Cunha had been lined up for a new deal by Molineux officials weeks ago, but it wasn’t until a few days before the transfer deadline day that he signed.

Cunha scored in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Molineux and then signed on the dotted line that night.

Wolves never wanted to sell Cunha in the January window and took the firm stance that the player was not for sale.

Cunha is said to have a £62.5 million release clause in his new contract, and it’s thought that clause will not drop if Wolves get relegated.

Most Wolves fans are realistic about Cunha and are prepared for another club to trigger that clause – but one surprising claim has now been made about what could happen with Cunha this summer.

Other clubs may try to sign Matheus Cunha for less than his Wolves release clause

Realistically, Cunha still being a Wolves player next season is unlikely.

The star has continually shown that he’s a player of serious quality, and he easily has the ability to play for a club in the Champions League.

Wolves are nowhere near challenging for European places at the moment, and Cunha likely isn’t going to want to stick around long-term.

He has the release clause, but journalist Ben Jacobs has now made a suggestion that likely won’t go down too well with some Wolves fans.

He told Give Me Sport: “I think suitors that are looking at Cunha – whether it’s Arsenal or Aston Villa or others – they will feel that regardless of Wolves going down or staying up, there’s a deal there to be had in the summer.

“And that may not necessarily be specifically by triggering the release clause.

“They may be able to work around its ballpark to get a slightly more preferable deal.”

Wolves will enrage fans if Cunha sells for less than release clause

This is a very interesting claim about Cunha, and one that will likely not go down too well.

Some already feel that the reported £62.5 million clause is too low.

But one would imagine that reasonable figure was negotiated to allow Cunha a way out.

If Wolves went down then clubs will probably be wanting to get Cunha for less than his clause. The club would certainly upset a lot of fans if they did sanction his exit for a lower fee.

Hopefully, Wolves will preserve their Premier League status, and Cunha will be sold or the reported £62.5 million.

Ideally he would not be sold at all. But it’s just hard to see no club offering that money for him if Wolves are still in the Premier League.
