Wolves transfer news: Wanderers taking a serious look at Saleem Akanbi

Wolves are reportedly taking a serious look at highly rated Cambridge United youngster Saleem Akambi.

That is according to journalist Alan Nixon this morning.

Akanbi is yet to make his debut for the U’s first-team, but is knocking on the door for a chance having impressed within the youth academy.

Apparently, Wolves are keen on the teenager. But the club could face competition from Championship side Stoke City.

Not too much is known about the midfielder since he is currently a youth team player.

Back in May, Akanbi was named in the LFE 11 (League Football Education).

That ‘acknowledges the football and academic progress of Under-18 players on apprenticeships at current or former English Football League (EFL) clubs’ according to Cambridge’s official website.

Akanbi had a tough start to his apprenticeship when he suffered a hamstring injury.

But he ‘showcased terrific resilience’ to make a strong recovery on the pitch.

Vanessa Walker, Head of Education, told LFE: “Saleem has displayed a positive mindset to rehab properly and come back fitter than ever.

“Saleem is an outstanding learner. He has an inspiring passion for his studies. He always pushes himself to his maximum and is willing to listen and learn more on how he can improve.”

It sounds as though Akanbi has really exciting potential.

And the youngster recently scored an absolutely brilliant goal in the FA Youth Cup in a game against Oxford United.

As seen in the clip put out but the club’s official Twitter account, Akanbi picks the ball up around about 30 yards from goal and unleashes an absolute thunderbolt into the top corner.

Ahead of the January transfer window, Akanbi’s name is certainly one to look out for.
