Wolves transfer news: Wanderers keen on Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse

Wolves have reportedly joined the race to sign Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.

That is the big claim from The Sun today, with interest in the England international mounting after his relegation with the Saints.

Ward-Prowse currently stands to play Championship football next season after his side’s dismal campaign.

But as expected, clubs are now lining up to try and sign the 28-year-old.

The Sun say West Ham United, Newcastle United and Aston Villa are all interested in the player, as well as Wolves.

Apparently, Southampton are hoping to bank around £40 million from any sale of Ward-Prowse this summer.

Ward-Prowse has been with Southampton since the age of eight, and is one of the club’s the greatest ever academy products.

The star has clocked up 409 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 55 goals.

Ward-Prowse has become a well established Premier League footballer down the years, and has carved out a reputation as being a free-kick specialist.

In January 2022, he scored one of his best ever against Wolves at Molineux.

He was all of about 35 yard out, and produced a knuckleball right into the top corner giving Jose Sa no chance.

It was an incredible hit, that left even some Wolves fans applauding. Thankfully, Wolves still ran out 3-1 winners that day.

There is next to no chance of Wolves signing James Ward-Prowse this summer

It would be extremely surprising if Wolves signed Ward-Prowse this summer.

If Southampton really do want £40 million then Wanderers will not be going in for him, given everything that has been said and written about the club’s financial problems.

The asking price would have to be significantly lower for Wolves to have a chance.

He’d be a great player to see in a Wolves shirt, and potentially he’d work well in a midfield with Mario Lemina and Joao Gomes.

Maybe he’d be something of a replacement for Ruben Neves, given his playmaking abilities. But this is surely just not happening. Newcastle, given their financial power, or Villa are far more likely to snap him up.
