Wolves transfer news: Wanderers interested in Nico Gonzalez

Wolves are reportedly ‘very interested’ in signing Nico Gonzalez from Barcelona this summer.

According to SPORT, Wanderers could come calling for the youngster should the Catalan giants make him available.

Gonzales is a central midfielder, and competition for places in that particular position at the Nou Camp is fierce.

Xavi has the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets, Pedri, Riqui Puig, Gavi and Sergi Roberto at his disposal. And Franck Kessie is joining the club ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Minutes could be hard to come by for him next season if he was to stick around.

At the moment, Barca are said to be debating what kind of role he could have next season.

SPORT say that Wolves are ‘very interested’ in the 20-year-old, who, of course, is respresented by the super-agent Jorge Mendes.

Mendes is said to be pushing for a definitive answer from Barcelona about what their plans are for his client.

One wonders if Barca may seek to use Wolves’ interest in Gonzalez to help them land Ruben Neves.

The Catalan giants are said to really like the 25-year-old Molineux maestro, and see him as a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets.

Perhaps Wolves could request Gonzalez is made part of any transfer involving Neves.

But the club would obviously need to also bring in a central midfielder with more experience and pedigree.

Fran Artiga, who coached the youngster during his time at La Masia, previously said of Gonzalez (Goal): “He is a super intelligent player, not only at a football level, but also academically. He is highly gifted, and that is reflected on the field. He will have a fast learning process.”

The star has a big future ahead of him, and seems to just be in a bit of an unfortunate situation with so many other central midfielders vying for minutes.

According to a feature from Goal last year, Gonzalez himself has been viewed as a possible long-term replacement for Busquets, as he is similar to him in terms of style and build.

He was supposedly tracked by Manchester City last summer (via Goal). And he had ‘impressive offers to go to the Premier League’ when he was just 16 according to Artiga.
