Wolves transfer news: Viktor Gyokeres now on the verge on Sporting CP move

Viktor Gyokeres, a player who has been on Wolves’ radar for months, is now closing in on a move to Sporting CP.

The Sweden international has been hot property in recent times, having enjoyed a fantastic season with Coventry City.

Gyokeres plundered 21 goals in the Championship, which was second only to Chuba Akpom of Middlesbrough.

Gyokeres really impressed with his all-round game.

And Wolves expressed interest in the player in the January window.

Ultimately, it was decided that a move would not be made, with Julen Lopetegui happy with Raul Jimenez, Diego Costa and new signing Matheus Cunha.

The club have kept tabs on Gyokeres since then. And last week, it was reported that Wanderers were still pushing to sign him.

But it looks as though the club’s hopes of landing the 24-year-old are about to be extinguished…

According to Mais Futebol, the negotiations between Coverty and Sporting have accelerated over Gyokeres.

The striker has recently changed who represents him, and is now working with Ali Dursun of HCM Sports and not Anders Carlsson of Nordic Sky.

This has apparently been the catalyst for Sporting now being on the verge of signing the player.

It is stated ‘initially, the form of payment of the commissions of the agreement was holding back the transfer’.

The Lions are now racing to finalise the deal.

The proposal is for Gyokeres to make a £17 million move. Coventry are thought to be trying to negotiate a 35% sell-on clause.

It is also mentioned that Gyokeres is an ‘express request’ of Sporting manager Ruben Amorim.

Wolves set to miss out on Viktor Gyokeres

This figure of £17 million is actually a fair bit lower than has been reported previously.

It had been indicated earlier that Gyokeres could set interested clubs back around £25 million this summer.

But £17 million is still perhaps too much for Wolves to pay for one player this summer, given the issues with FFP.

It is a shame, because Gyokeres seems a really good striker with a good all-round game.

Dave Edwards recently suggested that he could potentially have been another Raul Jimenez type for Wolves. He described him as ‘aggressive and powerful’.

Hopefully, Molineux officials have alternative targets in their sights.
