Wolves transfer news: Julen Lopetegui interested in bringing Nacho Fernandez and Mariano to Molineux

Julen Lopetegui is reportedly keen to bring two of his former players, Nacho Fernandez and Mariano Diaz, to Wolves.

The Spaniard hasn’t officially started work at Molineux yet.

But that has not stopped reports in Spain linking him with some of his old players.

Estadio Deportivo say the 56-year-old’s interest in the duo has ‘resumed’ now that he is back in management with Wolves.

Lopetegui worked with the pair during his brief stint as the head coach of Real Madrid.

It is stated that Lopetegui actually wanted to sign Mariano whilst he was at Sevilla.

The 29-year-old is not in the plans of Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu, and could be allowed to leave in January.

Lopetegui is also said to be a really big fan of Fernandez, and had instructed director Monchi to sign him for Sevilla. But a move never materialised.

It is pointed out that Lopetegui could do Madrid president Florentino Perez ‘a favour’ in January by signing Fernandez. That’s because his contract expires next summer, and he stands to leave the club for free then.

Wolves are in need of another centre-half and another striker.

There’s just four central defenders at Lopetegui’s disposal at the moment. And two of them are lacking in experience.

Sasa Kalajdzic is injured for the foreseeable future. And Raul Jimenez’s fitness struggles have been well documented.

And of course, Fabio Silva is on loan at Anderlecht. But it has been reported Wolves could see about paying the Belgian club for his return, since no recall clause was negotiated.

Nacho Fernandez and Mariano Diaz would be two great additions for Wolves, as Lopetegui eyes double deal

Links to Nacho and Mariano should be welcomed.

They have both been at Real for some time now, and while neither has ever really been at the top of the power rankings at the Bernabeu, they are both good players.

Fernandez would be a particularly good sigining.

He’s made 285 appearances for the club, which clearly suggests he’s got ability. He’s scored 15 goals and made nine assists.

Nacho can also play right-back as well as centre-back, which adds to the appeal given the poor form of Nelson Semedo and Jonny Castro Otto. At the age of 32, he is vastly experienced.

Mariano has been much less involved, playing 78 games across two stints. But he showed at Lyon that he’s a decent centre-forward, scoring 21 goals in 48 games for the French giants.
