Reported Wolves target Matheus Nunes is not at target for Liverpool this summer, according to The Athletic’s James Pearce.
The Sporting CP midfielder remains heavily linked with an exit from his club.
It is thought that Wolves are keen to sign the star, with Bruno Lage a big fan of the player.
But no bid has yet come in from Wanderers, perhaps suggesting player sales are needed first.
Recently it was reported that Liverpool had been showing interest in Nunes.
Correio da Manha claimed the Reds were ready to make a move for the 23-year-old.
But Pearce has taken to Twitter today to rubbish talk that they will swoop.
He said: “Told that talk of #LFC bidding for Sporting’s Matheus Nunes is nonsense. Club’s stance unchanged regarding summer business. No plans to strengthen midfield further in this window.”
Potentially, this will improve Wolves’ chances of signing Nunes.
Liverpool will have been a big lure, given their status as a top club under a world-class manager.
But there has also been some talk about Chelsea being interested in Nunes, so Wanderers may still be up against it slightly.
But Liverpool not being the picture is undoubtedly good news.
Hope for Wolves over Matheus Nunes as journalist rubbishes Liverpool links
This may well be a boost for Wolves, over a player that could seriously take Wolves to another level.
Liverpool would obviously have been major competition for Wolves over Nunes.
Hopefully, Wolves will soon be in a position to make a proper go of signing him.
It is the transfer link that simply refuses to go away.
The club ultimately didn’t sign Joao Palhinha after being linked for so long. So to actually succeed in signing Nunes would be welcomed by many a Wolves fan.
