Wolves transfer news: Joan Laporta committed to signing Ruben Neves

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is reportedly committed to signing Wolves star Ruben Neves, but manager Xavi is thought to prefer another player.

AS reported yesterday that the midfielder is very much Laporta’s preferred midfield signing in the summer.

He is keen to land the 25-year-old from Wolves, and would put him on high wages.

But not everyone is on board with what Laporta wants to do.

A very big potential sticking point is that Barca manager Xavi prefers Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad.

AS actually suggest that artificial intelligence has indicated Neves would be better than 97% of the defensive midfielders in his database for Barcelona. Zubimendi is ahead of 87% of the database.

It is thought that Barca now want to sign a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets.

The Spanish veteran has been one of the great defensive midfielders of his generation. Replacing him will be no easy task.

Over the years he has showcased incredible technical ability at the base of Barca’s midfield.

His next appearance for the club will be his 700th. And he has won all there is to win at club level.

£50,000-a-week star Neves would likely be a cheaper option than Zubimendi for Barca. He’ll only have a year left on his contract at Wolves in the summer.

Zubimendi’s deal with Sociedad expires in the summer of 2027. He reportedly has a release clause of £51.4 million (Daily Mail).

Ruben Neves to Barcelona feels less likely, following claims Xavi and Joan Laporta are at odds over Wolves star

A lot of Wolves fans feel this could be Neves’ last season at the club.

Many expected him to leave last summer. But Wolves’ asking price seemingly proved too prohibitive.

The fact Laporta and Xavi don’t seem to be in agreement about Neves is something that gives hope of him staying.

It’s hard to see Neves wanting that move if Zubimendi is Xavi’s preferred defensive midfield choice.

With Julen Lopetegui now at the helm, there might be even more of a chance of Neves staying beyond the summer.

He’s completely changed things at Molineux. And if Wolves can stay up, he might just fancy sticking around to continue working under the Spaniard.
