Wolves transfer news: Goncalo Guedes to join Benfica on loan again

Goncalo Guedes will be joining Benfica on loan again for next season.

That is the confident claim from Portuguese outlet A Bola this evening.

Guedes joined the Eagles for the second half of the 2022/23 season, after wanting to leave Wolves following a frustrating few months at Molineux.

Guedes performed far below expectations, and many fans never really warmed to him.

After Julen Lopetegui gave him a few chances, he was then sent out of loan to his old club Benfica.

The hope was that Guedes would thrive, and perhaps bring his market value back up.

But the move was a failure, with the player undergoing knee surgery twice. He only made 15 appearances.

Now, A Bola have said that they have learned from a source very close to the player that he will indeed be going back to Benfica – who just won the Primeira Liga title – on a temporary basis.

The publication go on to say that Guedes is facing a real battle to be fit for the start of the new season.

His second knee surgery will require him to spend weeks on the sidelines.

Goncalo Guedes situation is very frustrating with Wolves needing cash

The wording of the report from A Bola is quite definitive.

They seem pretty sure that Guedes will indeed be heading back to Benfica for another loan.

And that is frustrating really, because it doesn’t help Wolves right now, with the club needing cash.

But Benfica can’t be blamed for wanting to take him on loan again, since his stint in 2022/23 was wrecked by injury.

It would be a risk from Wolves to sanction another loan. But seemingly it’s one they are willing to take. The goal is for Guedes to get his market value high again so that the club can sell him for around about what they paid Valencia (£27.5 million).

But there’s no telling if, after his injury problems, he’ll be able to have the really good season Wolves need him to have.
